Delos Island
Delos is a small island of great archaeological interest, birth place of two gods (Apollo and Artemis), according to the Ancient Greeks. Delos is situated 3 km west of Mykonos island (less than half an hour by boat).The Minoan Fountain, the Terrace of the Lions, the House of the dolfins, decorated with noumerous mosaics are some of the unique landmarks you can admire at Delos. Delos has been declared a monument of World Heritage by UNESCO since 1990.
Mykonos Windmills
The Windmills have been a landmark of the island since the 16th century. They are located southerner of country and look towards the sea. The Windmills used to be a main part of the island’s activity and Mykonos used to be a major supplier of refined grain and flour. After the industrialisation the number of windmills began to decline and today exist only 7, which however continue with their light blue colour to stand imposingly in the island.
Little Venice
It is the western region of island next to the sea. This neighbourhood is famous for the unique houses, that the balconies are hanging above the sea. Some of the old houses are now bars, tavernas and clubs, where visitors can enjoy the sunset sipping on their favourite cocktail, and a few remain as private residences.
Little Venice is one of the most romantic places in Mykonos.
Paraportiani Church
Paraportiani Church is one of the most interesting architectural structures in Greece, located near Mykonos harbour entrance. The lovely church of Panagia Paraportiani is among the most photographed churches not only in Mykonos, but in the whole world. In reality it is not only one church, but 5 small churches, 4 from these are in the ground and a 5th and the most ancient is one level above. An emblematic monument of Mykonos, the Cyclades and Greece, Paraportiani church is responsible for some of the most idyllic pictures ever taken on the island!
Armenistis Lighthouse
The Armenistis Lighthouse is located in Cape Armenistis, at the north-western side of Mykonos and it was built in 1891 after the tragic sinking of the English steamboat VOLTA in 1887, when 11 members of the crew drowned. At present, this legendary lighthouse is managed by the Hellenic Navy’s Hydrographic Office. The lighthouse is all of 19 meters in height.
Panagia Tourliani Monastery
The monastery was constructed in the place where was found an old church of Panagia (Virgin Mary). The monastery of Virgin Mary is located 8km far from Chora town, in Ano Mera village. The visitors are astonished by the architecture of group, the imposing marble belfry, the Byzantine pictures and the all kind of religious objects that create a collection of immense value. The monastery also has a small ecclesiastical museum which includes wood carvings, embroideries, vestments, holy icons and the first bells of the monastery.
Monastery of Paleokastro
The Monastery is placed on a hill close to Ano Mera village. It is found north by the Ano Mera, in one of the most ancient regions of island. Paleokastro means old castle in Greek. Some metres from the Monastery is a church dedicated to Saint Vlasis that distinguishes for its beautiful dovecote. You can also see a strange prehistoric tomb consisting of a giant granite rock that rises 2.5 meters above the sea level.
